Romantic castles, gorgeous mountains, world-famous
wine...
Rhineland Palatinate, in the far west of
Germany, offers a remarkably rich and varied location for a get-away-from-it-all
break. The contrasts between the idyllic landscapes of the Rhine and Moselle,
the natural low mountain region, the historical towns and villages, gorgeous
mountains, beautifully romantic castles and the famous wine regions give Rhineland
Palatinate its unique identity. Romanticism and industry intermingle in a
combination of ancient past and ultra modern present.
Steeped in history, the capital of the state
Mainz - dates to 39 BC, when the Romans founded a settlement here.
By 300 AD, the settlement evolved into the capital of Germania Prima
province. Visit the marvellous Romanesque cathedral, parts of which
date from the 12th and 13th centuries. See the Gutenberg Museum,
dedicated to the city's most famous son, Johannes Gutenberg, whose
work in the 15th century paved the way for modern printing
techniques. And for some well-earned sustenance after sightseeing,
try some of the charming cafιs and taverns in this attractive
wine-producing town. The Rhine Valley, one of the most dramatic
landscapes in Rhineland-Palatinate and a favourite tourist area
since the 19th century, lies between Koblenz and Mainz. The river
curves its way through the slate mountains, vines growing on the
steep cliffs. Luxuriate in the beauty of this gorgeous valley. Hike
or rent a bicycle and explore wine villages that date back to Roman
times and imposing castles framed by dense forest.
Around two-thirds of all German wines
originate in this state, so why not visit the Moselle Valley, which
runs from Trier to Koblenz. Explore the vineyards, taste the wines,
and explore the many historical sites and beautiful small towns
along the way. Hike around the area, but remember, the slopes are
steep if you stray far from the river, so be prepared for tired
muscles. The breathtaking views of the countryside make it all
worthwhile. The town of Trier should be on everyones itinerary.
Situated in the Moselle valley, it was founded in 15 BC. The town
later became the capital of the Roman Empire in the 3rd Century AD.
Emperors such as Constantin the Great made Trier their home. One of
the highlights of any visit here is a walking tour around the Roman
remains. Beautifully situated, the town is very close to both
Luxembourg and France, which becomes obvious when tasting the local
cuisine.
