Destination Guide Nordrhein Westphalia, Germany

Nordrhein Westphalia, Germany

Find Accommodation in Nordrhein Westphalia
Europe's most diverse
cultural region...

Nordrhein Westphalia is Europe's most densely populated and diverse cultural region. The heavily industrialised cities of the Ruhrgebiet, Essen, Dortmund and Bochum contrast with the cathedral cities of Cologne, Munster and Aachen and the forests, lakes and rivers that cover some 75 per cent of the land area. The region is home to innumerable churches, cathedrals and palaces.

Located right on the Rhine, Cologne is a stylish, attractive city boasting magnificent architecture, internationally renowned museums, attractive shops, excellent beer and a truly awe-inspiring Gothic cathedral. From Cologne, make your way to the administrative capital and old university town of Bonn, birthplace of Beethoven and former seat of the Federal German government, where you will find the atmosphere most congenial. Make sure to make time for Aachen, near the Belgian and Dutch borders, a gorgeous cathedral town that dates from the 1st century AD. In 794 AD, the Emperor Charlemagne was so impressed with the revitalising waters of the area, he made Aachen his imperial headquarters. A trip to the castle of Augustusburg is essential sight-seeing. Situated in the town of Bruhl, around 15 km south of Cologne, the castle is a highlight for lovers of history, culture and architecture. One of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage sites, the castle is considered the most important baroque residential palace on the Rhine. Among a plethora of architectural and decorative baroque features, its most impressive feature is its ceremonial staircase. A ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone overlooks the staircase of stucco, sculpture and faux marble.

Get away from the main tourist trail and follow nature’s paths through the central mountains, or the lush nature parks of Sauerland and Siegerland. Take a break in one of the many available farm destinations. Go water-skiing or fishing on the region’s countless lakes. Hike or rent a bicycle and discover the region’s hidden treasures. Alternatively, begin your holiday in one of over 60 health spas, which provide a wide variety of fitness programmes. This will set you up nicely for the arduous work of being a tourist!
