Dreamy castles, historical towns... The former East German state of Brandenburg is home to historical towns, dreamy castles, country mansions and the exciting city of Berlin. With its wealth of lakes, rivers, canals and marshes, there is a wide range of water-based holidays on offer. Enjoy an unforgettable boating trip or indulge in some of the many aquatic sports on offer. Alternatively, rent a bicycle and journey through almost perfectly untouched countryside boasting a huge variety of flora and fauna.
Reinstated as the
capital of a reunited Germany in 1990, Berlin has a history like no
other. There is a tangible energy about the place. Its nightlife is
vibrant; its museums world-class; its music, art and theatre scene
second to none. There is a sense of living history around each
corner with monuments, palaces and remnants of the infamous wall all
testifying to the city’s tumultuous past. From Berlin, take a
50-minute train journey to Chorin, a small town to the north east of
Berlin. The Kloster Chorin, (Chorin Monastery) is considered one of
the finest examples of red-brick Gothic architecture and was built
by the Cistercian monks over six decades in the 13th and 14th
centuries. During the summer, a superb classical music festival is
held within the cloister.
Visit the town of Potsdam, former seat of
the Prussian Kings. Situated 24 km south of Berlin, it is
Brandenburg’s principal attraction for lovers of art and
architecture. Check out its famous Baroque and neo-Classical
buildings, the Sans-Souci castle and park, the Orangery castle,
temples and pavilions. The picturesque town of Brandenburg an der
Havel is well worth a visit. Dating from the 6th century, it
suffered enormous damage during WWII, but is undergoing extensive
restoration work. Make sure to visit the cathedral of St Peter and
Paul and the town’s baroque churches and numerous half-timbered
houses.
